Whirlpool 8171587RP 0-5-Inch Dryer Vent Periscope

Perfect For The Application
I have used this dryer vent MANY times in my two previous homes and am now about to buy it at a third. The Periscope Vent allows up to 5" of adjustment so that you can butt up your dryer to within 2 1/2" of the wall AND not have to have the house vent and dryer vent exactly in-line. One side easily slips over the plastic vent pipe on your dryer and the other comes with a clamp to keep it on the vent pipe in your house. Note that with the 2 1/2" clearance you will need a LONG screwdriver to tighten the clamp around the vent side that mates up with your house duct - either that or a long, thin arm. You'll also want a spotter as you slide the dryer towards the wall so that you mate the vent holes up properly and don't crush the thin metal of the Dryer Vent or crack the plastic duct on your dryer.

Once you adjust the Periscope Vent to the needed width, you can trim the excess sheet metal if you wish - with this product, as opposed to say the Whirlpool 0-18 inch Periscope,...

Good idea but difficult to implement in my case
Bought this dryer vent adapter looking for a way to reduce the clutter behind the dryer and also allow the dryer to be closer to the wall. It arrived a bit banged up but I was able to straighten it out. Overall quality is poor with loose joints that could leak under pressure.
In my case this design didn't work out. Our dryer and washer completely fill up the small laundry space with walls close-by on the right and left. So, to make this work, I needed to pull the washer completely out so I could lay on the floor and attempt to connect this adapter to both the dryer and the wall vent opening. Sounds easy but it wasn't. I tried two different types of 4" clamps to make the connections and managed only to crush the lightweight adapter without ever achieving an airtight connection. Poor fit and lousy clamps led to frustration. Perhaps a few well placed sheet metal screws would have been better.
I finally gave up and tossed it. My solution was a better quality version of this...

Good solution
I tried to find a product like this at big box building supply stores and even went to a plumbing supply store where contractors purchase materials. The one they had was far too wide. I should have checked on Amazon first!

The other reviews were really helpful and i ordered the Scotch 3311 Foil tape and the Tekton 3646 tin snips as well. Based on the other reviews, my husband and i modified the box to make it shorter from side to side and then taped every seam. We have not noticed any dryer lint in the subsequent month.

Do this on a day when you have plenty of time and patience, because it requires a bit of trial and error due to the lack of working room. We eventually attached this to the wall first, and the "docked" the dryer last. Our width measurements were accurate which helped. Having two people to install this really is helpful!!

The only problem were the clamps that came with this. They were too short to go over the periscope once it...
